What is Berberine?
Berberine is an alkaloid found in several plants including Berberis vulgaris (barberry), goldenseal, and Oregon grape. It activates AMPK through similar mechanisms to Metformin, earning it the nickname 'Nature's Metformin.' It has extensive research for blood sugar control, cardiovascular health, and increasingly for longevity.
Mechanism of Action
Berberine activates AMPK by inhibiting mitochondrial Complex I (same as Metformin) and through direct AMPK phosphorylation. It also inhibits PCSK9 (reducing LDL), activates GLP-1 secretion, modulates the gut microbiome toward healthier species, and has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects.
Berberine Dosing Protocol
500 mg 2–3 times daily with meals (total 1,000–1,500 mg/day). Take with food to improve absorption and reduce GI side effects. Cycle: 8–12 weeks on, 4 weeks off (to prevent gut microbiome disruption).
