What is Urolithin A?

Urolithin A is a metabolite produced by gut bacteria from ellagitannins found in pomegranates, walnuts, and berries. It is the most potent known activator of mitophagy — the cellular process of clearing damaged mitochondria and replacing them with new, healthy ones. It has completed Phase I and II clinical trials and is commercially available as Mitopure.

Mechanism of Action

Urolithin A activates mitophagy by inhibiting mTOR and activating PINK1/Parkin pathways, which tag damaged mitochondria for degradation. This clears dysfunctional mitochondria and stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis, resulting in a net improvement in mitochondrial quality and function.

Urolithin A Dosing Protocol

500–1,000 mg/day oral (Mitopure). Clinical trials used 500 mg and 1,000 mg/day. Take with food. Effects build over weeks to months — not an acute supplement.
