What is VIP?

VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is a 28-amino acid neuropeptide found throughout the nervous system and immune system. It is one of the most potent anti-inflammatory neuropeptides known and has gained significant attention in the CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) community, particularly for biotoxin illness (mold, Lyme disease). Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker has used VIP as the final step in his CIRS treatment protocol.

Mechanism of Action

VIP binds to VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors, activating cAMP signaling that suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-12), activates regulatory T-cells, promotes Th2 immune responses, has vasodilatory effects, and regulates circadian rhythms. It is a master regulator of the neuroimmune axis.

VIP Dosing Protocol

50 mcg intranasal 4 times daily (Shoemaker CIRS protocol). Some researchers use 50–100 mcg 2–4 times daily. Must be used only after other CIRS treatments are completed (otherwise can worsen symptoms).

Frequently Asked Questions about VIP

Can VIP help with mold illness/CIRS?
Yes — VIP is the final step in Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker's CIRS protocol. It addresses the downstream inflammatory dysregulation that persists after biotoxin removal. However, it must only be used after completing prior protocol steps (CSM, antifungals, etc.) — using it prematurely can worsen the condition.
